Archivio Tipografico was born out of a desire to safeguard a craft through its tools and represents a response to a violent technological shift in the printing arts.

It’s a collection of tools collected from various printing houses, representing their historical and material memory. Printing presses, movable type, and foundry samples are actively used to preserve the artisanal tradition of bookmaking.

Archivio Tipografico was founded in the early 2000s by Emanuele Mensa as a private collection of letterpress printing presses. It later continued as a collection of movable type, thanks to the advice and infectious passion of Enrico Tallone, who also suggested the name we still bear today, inspired by the masthead of the in-house magazine of the Nebiolo Foundry in Turin.

Today, it boasts approximately 2,200 drawers of movable type, including lead, wood, and resin, nine fully functional printing presses, and all the typographic tools necessary for this profession.

This collection is complemented by that of the Giovanni Naretto Rosso Foundation, which the association is pleased to host in its premises, for a total of 400 drawers of lead type.
